Mount Royal University in Calgary is offering a new degree, a Bachelor of Midwifery. Offered through its Department of Advanced Specialty Health Studies. The Midwifery program is designed to prepare students for administering primary care during and after childbirth in the case of low-risk pregnancies.
Midwifes are still a popularly sought out profession, and with only 52 currently working throughout the entire province of Alberta, they are an under represented group in the medical scene.
In western Canada, Mount Royal University joins the University of British Columbia and University College of the North in offering this program. This is the only such program offered by any university in the province of Alberta.
